Come Together to PLAY
At Home in the City
Instructor: Peter Anderson
Our project aims to create a respite for people without permanent housing and help them reconnect with the local community.
When you immerse yourself in a board game or in some stress-free play, you can connect with people around you. As little as an hour or two of stress- free play, can provide considerable physical and mental benefits.
We have come up with colourful plywood cubes that have interchangeable attachments with board games or waterproof seat cushions on them. Some of the cubes open up so the game pieces can be conveniently stored within them. The cubes can also be stacked together to create fun play-scapes for adults as well as kids. The plywood we would use are left-over panels that weren’t used in construction or other applications. Using 1/2” plywood would be ideal to ensure that these cubes would be durable enough to withstand long time use in both inside and outside settings. Using leftover materials would help keep the costs of making these cubes at a minimum. We plan on making a set of 3 cubes that can be used together as a starting point, along with attaching instructions to make more cubes in the future.
Our proposal plans to add onto temporary shelters to create gathering spaces outside their sleeping areas. The Play Cubes could potentially be a stepping stone to ultimately build community within shelters.
